The appeal of gaming: Social connection, escapism and the Illusion of Control

Online gaming, including betting, has become a widely accepted form of entertainment in modern society. While it remains a harmless activity for many, it can evolve into addictive and problematic behavior for some. The findings of a systematic review aiming to provide an overview of prevalence studies published between 2016 and the first quarter of 2022, indicate that 2.43% of the adult population is at a moderate risk or classified as “at risk” gamers, while 1.29% experience significant harm due to problematic gaming.
At the core of online gaming lies the thrill of risk-taking and the potential for reward. The excitement that comes from placing a bet combined with the anticipation of a potential win, creates a powerful adrenaline rush. This sense of excitement is amplified by the unpredictability and uncertainty that are inherent in gaming.
For many players, the possibility of winning a substantial amount of money, even with long odds, becomes a compelling motivator. The psychological appeal of high-risk/high-reward scenarios can be highly addictive, often prompting individuals to continue gaming despite the odds.
In addition to the thrill of reward, gaming is often a highly social activity, bringing people together in a shared experience. Whether through collaborative gameplay or friendly competition, online gaming fosters social interaction and connection. It allows players to bong over common goals, celebrate victories and even navigate challenges together, making gaming an enjoyable and engaging pastime for many.
For some, gaming also serves as a temporary escape from the pressures of daily life. It provides a distraction from personal struggles, financial concerns, or emotional turmoil, offering a mental break from real-world problems. The immersive nature of gaming can allow players to momentarily forget their troubles and focus entirely on the game. However, for some, this form of escapism can evolve into a coping mechanism, leading to increased gaming as a way to avoid addressing real-world difficulties.
Another key factor in gaming’s appeal is the sense of control it offers. In games that involve skill, strategy, or decision making, players often feel empowered by their ability to influence the outcome. This illusion of control, particularly in games with elements of chance, can be highly motivating. Believing that their actions or decisions can impact the result, sustains player engagement and may contribute to persistent gaming behavior, as players strive to master the game and improve their chances of success.
For many individuals, the prospect of financial gain is a powerful motivator in gaming. The idea of winning a significant sum of money with a relatively small investment is incredibly enticing. For some, gaming represents a potential pathway to financial independence or a way to supplement their income. Media stories of big winners and life changing jackpots often fuel this desire, creating a sense of hope and encouraging more people to try their luck.
In certain cultures, and families, gaming is not only accepted but may even be a longstanding tradition. Many people are introduced to gaming at a young age, often through family members or cultural events, which normalizes the activity. This early exposure can shape attitudes towards gaming, leading to a higher likelihood of participation in life.
Understanding these diverse motivations is crucial for appreciating the positive aspects of gaming while also addressing the risks associated with problematic gaming. For many individuals, gaming remains a form of entertainment and leisure. However, for those who struggle with gaming-related difficulties, recognizing these underlying motivations can be the first step to finding support and developing a healthier, more balanced approach to gaming.
